Emergency Department is staffed and equipped to care for 36,000
patients a year ranging from newborn to end of life. The MGUH ED
provides high quality care to a wide variety of patients, including
adult and pediatric patients from the MedStar Georgetown Transplant
Institute and the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Additionally, MedStar Georgetown is accredited by the Joint
Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center and receives acute
patients from all around the DC region. All of the nurses in the
Emergency Department are certified in BLS, ACLS, PALS, and are NIH
Stroke Scale Certified but many also have their CEN, TNCC, and ENPC
certifications. Leadership supports and encourages nurses to
enhance their educational expertise and professional development.
MedStar Georgetowns Emergency Department prides itself on its
collaborative governance and decision making which creates and
implements new ideas centered on evidenced based practice. A team
approach to staffing and assignments is a major initiative that is

SchedulesFixed Shifts (Day/Night/Mid Shifts) based on
General Summary of Position:
A nurse is responsible for providing competent professional nursing
care using the nursing process. These functions are performed in
accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar
Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures
- EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING REQUIRED: Graduate of an accredited
School of Nursing; Bachelors degree or higher in Nursing
- LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION: Current D.C. license as a
Registered Professional Nurse upon hire; certification in Basic
Life Support. Certification in specialty or related specialty
- EXPERIENCE: To meet unit criteria, at least two (2) years
recent acute care experience in the relevant patient care area
preferred. Two years of Emergency Room, ICU, or IMC experience
- SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Ability to perform the
nursing technologies. Effective verbal and written communication
skills. Ability to set priorities and work under stress.Primary
Duties and Responsibilities:
- PRACTICE & QUALITY
- Provides relationship-based care that promotes continuous,
consistent, efficient and accountable delivery of nursing care
using the nursing process.
- Demonstrates professional practice utilizing the framework of
the professional practice model and is grounded in a culture of
safety and quality.
- COMMUNICATION & COLLABORATION
- Communicates and collaborates with inter-professional groups to
ensure coordination, continuity and safe care.
- Communicates verbal information and documents written and
electronic information that reflects the planned and delivered care

organizational goals inclusive of the mission, vision and

- Delegates and supervises nursing staff in providing patient
